The Southern Colorado Community Band was organized in April of 1995 by Ron Cross of Cross Music Company in Canon City, Colorado to participate in the annual Canon City Music and Blossom Festival Parade. Over the years, the organization has developed into a Concert Band and has performed numerous concerts in Fremont, Chaffee, and Pueblo Counties. The goal of the SCCB is to provide community members an artistic outlet for their musical abilities through the performance of quality instrumental literature at regularly scheduled public events.
The SCCB has a diverse membership. Musicians participating in the band range in age from teenagers to senior citizens and include men and women from all walks of life; including but certainly not limited to retired community members, professional musicians, music educators, and high school/college musicians.
The band has performed at the Fremont Center For the Arts "Art On The Arkansas", The Canon City and Florence Chamber of Commerce “Entertainment In the Park" summer series and the Westcliffe "In Concert" series. Their schedule has included performing as the guest ensemble for the Tri Peaks League Honor Band as well as the Pueblo Municipal Band, The CSU-Pueblo University Wind Ensemble, Canon City and Florence High School Bands, and the Pueblo West Community Band. The band has been part of the Colorado Community Band Festival and in 2013 provided a concert during the 75th Annual Music and Blossom Festival. A proud moment was when they provided music for our veterans as they boarded the train at the Royal Gorge Route Railroad Veteran's Day Celebration.
Although SCCB concerts are free to all who attend, donations collected throughout the year go directly towards the Ron Cross Memorial Scholarship Fund. Over the years, the SCCB has awarded many scholarships to local high school seniors who will be pursuing a degree in music.
